A kindred spirit. His warm brown eyes seemed to glow in the muted forest light, and the sun coming from behind hit his hair and it shone brighter than before, almost creating a halo. She shook her head lightly, berating herself for her fanciful thoughts. He was just an ordinary man. An ordinary man who was now a lot closer and stretching out his hand in greeting.
“I’m Adrian,” he introduced himself. “I’m from Adiron, just north of the forest.”
Persephone took his hand and a small bolt of electricity ran through her arm. Her eyes widened and she saw Adrian’s do the same.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “I’m not sure what happened there.”
Persephone smiled softly, though her heart still pounded from the shock. “That’s okay.” They looked at each other and laughed as they realized they’d repeated their first words to each other almost exactly. “I’m Persephone.” She chuckled, delighting in the merry sound of his deep laugh and the way his warm eyes seemed to dance, slightly crinkled at the corners from his mirth. “I’m from Mythosandria, just through the trees to the east. To be honest, I’m also trying to escape for some peace.”
Adrian nodded, a knowing look in his eyes. “I’ll share my story if you share yours.” He suddenly grinned devilishly.
She couldn’t help but flash her own grin in response. A deep breath sent sharp pain through her ribs, reminding her of why she was out here. She grimaced in pain, holding her hands to her side.
Adrian stepped forward, concern deepening his voice. “Are you all right?”
Persephone nodded, pain straining her voice. “I will be. Just some bruised ribs, courtesy of the drunkard I’m supposed to call Father.” Slowly straightening her stance, she took shallow breaths as the discomfort subsided. She glanced up at Adrian, who stood a head taller than her, despite being rather tall herself. His eyes had darkened and were almost black. She noticed his eyes scan her face, pausing on her cheek, and she guessed that a bruise was starting to show where she’d been struck. Adrian reached up his large hand to gently brush the tender flesh and Persephone flinched as a small stab of pain radiated from her cheek. He paused, his hand hovering over the skin but not touching while his eyes, still dark with anger, seemed to search her own, looking for what she didn’t know.
“Your own father did this to you?” he demanded quietly, his voice steady but his growing fury imminent. All she could do was nod and look down. His finger hooked her chin to force her to look up. “You do not look down in shame. You have nothing to ashamed about. He’s the brute who should be ashamed. I have half a mind to tell him as such.”
As he turned in the direction of her village, Persephone grabbed his arm. “No, please don’t!” she cried, hating herself for sounding so weak. “It’s not all the time; he just has bad days, that’s all.”
“And that gives him the right to lay a hand in anger on you? You should not be defending him. You’re the one who needs defending.”
His words pricked her pride. “Like I’m a defenseless, helpless maiden in need of rescuing? I can defend myself, thank you.” Anger flooded her where fear had been only moments before. “I won’t be standing idly by for much longer, I’ll have you know. I don’t care that they have plans for me to marry that pig the mayor calls a son,” she spat. “I just need to find somewhere to go when I leave.”
Adrian stood back and looked her up and down. She watched him take in her fiery stance and nod. “Glad to hear it.”

Thankful the blinds were up today, he had a good view up the street and noticed a tall

businesswoman who looked incredibly attractive. A few moments later, as she came closer, he realized it was Krissy. Without thinking, he smiled in pure delight He managed to resist the urge to wave, though, as he wanted Krissy’s appearance kept from Aubree until she was right with them.

“Ahem.” A little cough at his side announced Darla’s return, and she placed the plates on the table, along with a little pot of whipped cream. Derek noticed the look of daggers she gave Aubree as she straightened up and walked back toward the counter, only to bump into Krissy, who had just entered the small diner.

About time, I was about to send a search party, Derek joked across the link. Now that he knew they had such a connection, he planned on using it as much as he could. A sarcastic tilt of her head had him chuckle.

“What is so funny,” Aubree asked as she tucked into her slice of pie.

“Oh, just thinking,” Derek replied.

“Of what?” she demanded.

“Of me,” came Krissy’s voice from over Aubree’s shoulder. “Good morning, darling.” She beamed at Derek as he slid across to give her room next to him. They greeted each other with a tender kiss, slightly longer than necessary.

Pulling out of the kiss, the couple looked across the table at the intruder, who was fuming mad and it showed clearly on her red-suffused face.

“Jealousy is not a good look on you, honey,” Krissy contritely quipped, gently smiling at the woman who thought herself a competitor.

Derek silently applauded Krissy’s composure in the face of Aubree’s clear fury. “The pie is especially good today, sweetheart,” he told Krissy, winking at the pleasure on Darla’s face. Turning to Aubree he decided to make the introductions, however obvious and pointless they may be. “So, my dear, here is my former lover from England, Aubree. You know the one who stomped on my heart when it was in need of some comfort. Aubree, this is Krissy, the woman who is currently giving my heart all the tender loving care it needs, and then some.” Wrapping his arm around Krissy’s shoulders, he sighed with content.

Are you sure it’s wise to provoke her like this? Krissy asked, clearly unsure of Aubree’s reaction.

Sweetheart, if she tries anything, the wolf would strongly object. I’m not saying I would let him loose on the woman, but I’d let him show his teeth. Her chuckle was his reward and the animal howled again with delight.

Eden's needlepoint, framed

Eden Connor is the author of the Devilish DeMarco Men series. There are currently three books in the series, Sounds of Soft Pleasure, Wildly Inappropriate and the latest Incidental Contact. A fourth is in the works and I hope to have her drop by when it releases! She has other series, The Carmine Club and Give Me Shelter. You can find first chapters and series overviews on her blog. It happens that we have a shared interest outside erotica, needlepoint.

What I think really tells you about Eden Connor is her home, South Carolina. If you get the chance to ask her about it, do! She has many stories to tell, places to visit, and experiences to reminisce. Eden’s alma mater, Converse, is a ladies college that might have been a draw for Jocelyn of Kitten in my Blue Moon House prequels. Founded in 1889, its first class was a whopping six students. History is sprinkled throughout the state in plantations, memorials, and tours.

My WIP, nearly finished!

As Eden tells me, “If you’re in the Upstate in springtime, don’t miss the chance to jump off the interstate and see thousands of peach trees in bloom—probably the most romantic sight ever.” She has travelled, but never found a place she loved more.

The serenity of the setting caused him to leave the truck door slightly ajar rather than slamming it. The scent of fresh-mown grass hung in the warm April air, and the bright afternoon sun sparkled off the surface of the large fishing pond in the Walker's spacious backyard. The first thing he noticed was the wheelchair ramp built over the steps. That was new since the last time he'd towed a vehicle away from the Walker's. The last car he'd towed from here had been their son Charlie's Jeep, and Lila had met him in the driveway that day. That had been almost two years back: the day after Charlie had pitched for the high school baseball team, winning the state championship, and then shocked the whole town by turning down his scholarship to the state university in favor of joining the Marines.
