You want me to choose just one mythical creature that’s my favorite? That’s like asking me to choose only one ice cream flavor or tell you which Doctor in Doctor Who was the best! (*cough*Ten*cough*)

I’ve changed my mind a few times but I’m going to settle on Cthulhu, an old god that is a part of the Lovecraftian mythos. As a big fan of both H.P. Lovecraft and horror in general (I was reading Stephen King at 7), the idea of an ancient being so alien and unable to be understood, lurking in the depths below hits all the pleasure centers in my brain. I can’t tell you why that appeals to me so much but there are hints of it in my own work, subconsciously added.

Which is probably why one of my favorite movies, Cabin in the Woods directed by an old god himself, Joss Whedon, is one of my favorite movies with an ending that makes me smile.

I have issues.

They say demons and angels don’t mix. I say people should mind their own damn business.

My brother, Damian, has been my rock ever since mom left. Didn’t matter that I'm demon-blooded. I was his and he was mine.

But nothing lasts forever.

He wants me to go to college. I’d rather fight a hundred sentinels than lead a boring, safe life hiding who I am. So when a nephilim goes missing, I go behind Damian’s back to find the teen. Maybe if I can solve the case, he will upgrade me to his partner in crime solving.

As bodies begin dropping, I realize I’m in way over my head. But there’s no way I’m going to admit that, not when my future hangs in the balance. It's do or die time, and I'm not going down without a fight.

Get ready for 22 doses of hot, heart-pumping romance from the darkside with heroes and heroines to keep you turning the pages! Grab this 24-author set now for only 99 pennies! This is a limited edition, and the steal-of-a-price is for a limited time featuring stories from award winning, bestselling authors.

For your reading pleasure, we'll be featuring each author with a story of her choice for the next few weeks. Some will include interviews, and all will include excerpts. Today's featured author is Alyssa Drake.

1.   Is there a common thread that runs through your books?
There are two themes which tend to creep into my writing.  The first is the above idea of a strong woman, not a shrew, but a woman who fights for what she believes in with her whole heart.  The second theme is the idea that each character’s motivation stems from a concept of love - love of money, love of power, loss of love, and even simply love itself.

2.   If money was of no concern, what would you envision as your perfect lifestyle?
My perfect lifestyle is a tropical island, with no neighbors, and a boat anchored just off the dock.  I would eat freshly caught fish, swim in crystal blue oceans, and bonfire on the beach every night.  During the day, I would write (yes, even with all the money in the world).  Every few months, we’d pull anchor and sail to the coast, so we could visit the people we loved.  I would really enjoy a helicopter pad too, just because sometimes a boat just isn’t fast enough.

3.   Besides writing, what things are you most passionate about?
I am passionate about books in general: reading them, writing them, organizing them, and collecting signed paperbacks.  I also love football (the American kind), working with chocolate, and any holiday that involves decorating.

4.   Not limited to writing, what do you believe to be some of your greatest accomplishments so far?
Some of my greatest accomplishments are: getting my first two novels published, graduating college with a B.S. in Business and a minor in French, and raising three kids.

5.   Name a few of your favorites
Favorite color: blue-green (like the ocean)
Favorite smell: vanilla
Favorite food: pizza
Favorite drink: coffee (sugar and cream)
Favorite TV show: The Big Bang Theory
Favorite movie: Undercover Blues
Favorite quote: “How does one become a butterfly? You must want to fly so much that you are willing to give up being a caterpillar.” Trina Paulus
Favorite book(s): Pride & Prejudice, 1984, and Harry Potter

Lose yourself in Wiltshire
Samantha Hastings lived a quiet, peaceful life on her family’s country estate. With no man to order her around and no stifling society rules to follow, she considered herself blessed. However, when her brother’s ship sinks during a short trip to France, Samantha receives a request from her sister-in-law to return to town and manage the late Earl’s finances. Suddenly thrust into society, Samantha faces an unfamiliar world and a pair of very familiar green eyes.

Lord Benjamin Westwood never intended on following through with his rash promise to his best friend. Now, with Edward’s death, Benjamin becomes the unwilling guardian to Edward’s bratty little sister, who has grown up considerably since the last time they met. His intention to marry her off to the first available suitor is thwarted when he finds himself falling for Samantha’s unique demeanor. He lights upon the perfect plan; a marriage of convenience, giving him the opportunity to romance Samantha without distraction.

However, when they discover Edward’s disappearance was due to foul play, Benjamin’s perfect plan begins to quickly unravel. Now, Samantha is in more danger than either of them realized and Benjamin is running out of time.
“Really,” Benjamin murmured thoughtfully, his eyes flickered over the young men roving hungrily on the sidelines.  “I do not think you know the first thing about men.”
“I do,” insisted Samantha.  She stopped dancing to place her hands firmly on her hips.  The childish pose brought a smile to Benjamin’s lips.
“Let me show you how much you do not know.  Shall we retire to the terrace; it is such a lovely night?”  Without waiting for a response, he grasped her wrist lightly and tugged her towards the open glass doors.  Samantha followed reluctantly.
The balcony, bathed in light from the ballroom, provided shadowy corners for couples seeking a little more privacy.  It was into one of these dim corners that Benjamin pulled Samantha, pushing her back against the ivy covered bricks.  Both his hands rested on the greenery, sufficiently trapping Samantha between his body and the wall.  He inhaled her scent, sweet like honeysuckle.
He moved closer, the heat from her body licked flames onto his skin.  Their breath intermingled, caressing two pairs of lips before escaping into the star-spattered sky.  His hips slid nearer, pressing into her with his unreleased desire.  One finger tipped her chin until she was forced to stare into his eyes.  The other hand moved behind her head, clasping her neck, just above the bodice.
“This,” he rumbled softly, their lips separated by mere centimeters, “is how a potential suitor might behave.  Can you handle this?”
“Yes,” she answered defiantly, her voice wavering.  She placed her hands on his chest, as if she were planning to shove him away.  However, she did not exert any pressure, nor did she move them; her hands remained splayed across his broad chest.
“And this?”  He inched closer, his lips brushing her in the barest of kisses.
“Yes,” Samantha managed to squeak out.
Benjamin kissed her again; lightly at first and then with increasing urgency.  He deepened the kiss, his body pressed against the full length of her.  His hands wrapped around her waist, pulling her against him.  Unconsciously they tightened their carnal hold.  His lips nibbled the corners of her mouth.  Urgently his tongue pushed past her lips, tasting her sweet breath.
“Mmmm,” her protest died under his assault.  Attempting to mirror his actions, she kissed him back, not as forcefully, but with the same passion and intensity he felt.  He wanted more of her.  He wanted to take her right here, on the balcony, in full view of every guest in attendance.  He needed to claim her as his, forever.

#Midweektease Ethereal Witness

Thought I'd share another snippet from Ethereal Witness today. If you read Ethereal Protector, you might remember that Summer was having flashbacks to her previous incarnation, Mary. The same is happening to Paige, but her ancestor is Jane, a slave in Salem at the time of the witch trials.

Paige pulled the door closed behind her, hesitating until she was sure the lady still slept. She only took two paces before she was approached by the master. He was still dressed from dinner, although his jacket and shirt were both open.
“Excuse me, sir.” She tried to move out of his path, sweeping her narrow black skirts closer.
His hand spread over her hip, taking hold and pulling her closer. “Lydia is asleep?”
Paige nodded.
“Good. Jane, I have a task for you.” He fumbled at his waist and she shook her head, backing away. “You have no husband, is that correct?”
Paige’s eyes darted from the growing expanse of white skin beneath his navel to his eyes. “Please, Master.” She tugged to free her arm.
“I won’t force you, Jane.” He pulled her flush against him, his erection pressing into her belly. “But I would reward you for helping rid me of this. You betray no one and Lydia isn’t bothered by dalliances as long as they aren’t with her lady friends.” His hand slid down the back of her arm, cupping her elbow.
“But I don’t… I’ve never…”
“Hush, Jane. I understand. Here, take it like this.” His hand guided hers to his length.
She fumbled, fingers slipping, spreading the wetness already there. In moments, she puzzled out how to stroke him. “Master Charles, I shouldn’t.”
“Shh. You’re doing exactly what I asked. Let me touch you.”
She flinched and backed up, but his hands went to her face and she relaxed when he didn’t grab for her breasts or ass. He drew lines over her cheekbone, along her jaw.
“Yes, keep it like that.” His eyes rolled back and his grip on her chin tightened, tipping it up. “You are doing it perfectly.” His nose brushed hers and he hunched. The girth of him had grown slightly, but now he throbbed and her apron grew damp. Rather than release her, Charles pulled her tighter, kissing her.
Gasping, she gave him access to her mouth and he claimed it, tongue probing in an unfamiliar way. She had kissed boys, but never like this.

***

Paige started awake. “What the fuck was that?” Only when she saw the time on her clock did she regret the words. Listening carefully, she waited for one of her roommates to wake and yell at her or pound on the wall.

Alex Owens ~ Dark Destiny ~ One of 20+ stories in Creatures #paranormal #romance #boxedset #99cents

If you’d ask me to pick my favorite creature of myth a few years ago, the choice would have been an easy one. Witches, with their elemental powers born from the earth. They are conduits for nature’s awesome, and perfectly observable, raw magic. Witches are the closest thing we have to being possible, being real, in that regard. Now with the years creeping up on me, I’d go a different route. Vampires. They are immortal and at a time when getting myself out of bed each morning reveals a new ache or pain, I’d certainly appreciate the lack of cellular degeneration. Their lasting youthfulness could also fix what is wrong with my reflection in the mirror these days. Can’t you imagine it? No need to waste buckets of money on cosmetics, dental work, fad diets or medical expenses. That alone would have me greedily sucking down the nearest cup of platelets! While in my very own castle, of course. Alex Owens is the Author of Dark Destiny.

You can find out more about Alex here.

I've loved mythology since I was really small, so much so that I'd buy books on Ancient Egypt (that was my absolute favourite mythology) with my pocket money. But picking just one creature is really tough! There are so many, and as a paranormal romance author, that gets all the harder! I've written about shifters, vampires, necromancers, dryads and sirens, not to mention the mermaid I'm writing with J & L Wells for this set! Which makes it really hard to pick.

So I'm going with Ammit, mostly in homage to my love of Ancient Egypt as a child. Ammit is an Ancient Egyptian demon who was part lion, part hippo and part crocodile, and she was also known as the devourer of the dead. Which sounds kind of ominous, but actually is really interesting. The Ancient Egyptians believed that when a person's soul traveled to the afterlife, their heart was weighed by Anubis (the God of Cemeteries & Embalming) against the feather of Ma'at (the Goddess of Truth). If the heart was heavier than the feather, then the soul had led a bad life, and Ammit devoured the heart, stopping that soul from reaching the afterlife.

Sorry, history lesson is now over! I find it all so fascinating that I can't help myself! Which is why I chose Ammit in the first place. The whole mythology is fascinating to me, and I'm planning to write a series based on the Ancient Egyptian Gods & Goddesses at some point...I don't think they get enough page time!

I hope you enjoy our Creatures box set! There's a fantastic collection of stories in it!
Four years ago, Ronan thought he'd lost his best friend, and he's never truly recovered.
