She didn’t lift her head at her name. She sat still on the
shore of the pond, breath swirling at the back of her throat. She paused before
turning to the speaker, not answering the eunuch.
“He will see you now.”
A summons. She could ignore the messenger, but not the message.
Her body was required. Her mind and heart would remain here, floating among the
brightly the coloured blooms on the still reflective surface of the pond.
Reflections of her, of who she might be, who wasn’t. There would be pleasure,
but it would be only a reflection.
